Are you looking to convert BMP to JPG? There are plenty of ways you can do that, through software installed in your laptop or through online BMP to JPG converters.
We’ll take a look at some of the way you can make a conversion in this article!
But first, let’s take a look at what each of the two formats mean.
BMP is short for “Bitmap.” BMP format pictures are in a raster graphic format. This format is used for the storing of two-dimensional colored/monochrome images. These were initially introduced on Windows, but today, they are functional on both Macs and PCs.
BMP format pictures store each pixel’s color data in the image without any compression. Consider this example: a 20×20 BMP image will include the color data for 400 pixels. BMP pictures are much better in quality, and appear to be more high resolution and crisp. Their downside is that these pictures are often high-quality, and thus, significantly large in size. This is due to the lack of pixel compression in BMP images.
The BMP format is usually used for printable images. Images in this format are rare these days, since they’re not optimized for colored images with intricate gradients. BMP was one of the original file formats for Paint (Remember that? It’ll be important later!)
These images are lossless, i.e., BMP images can be made smaller, but with no compression of the pixels. Since there is no compression, file sizes remain large. Here’s an example of a large-sized image in BMP format.
You can see the file size is pretty large; a whopping 61.5 MB.
JPG, also referred to as JPEG, stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group.” Images in JPG format are compatible with varying levels of pixel compression, thus making it one of the best options for web graphics. Additionally, they’re a lot smaller in size than BMPs. Look at the same image as the BMP shown above in JPG format; a much smaller and compact 7.26 MBs.
Now let’s get technical.
There are over 16 million potential colors in a JPG image. These are produced by using eight bits for the colors red, green, and blue (present in the RGB format.) It provides 256 values for a singular color. When you multiply 256 values for one color with the 256 values of the other two colors, you’ll have 16 million+ colors to work with.
Despite how versatile its colors can be, it is easy for JPG images to have pixels which look significantly blocky. This problem usually occurs when there is over-compression within the pixels.
Why would you want to convert BMP to JPG?
BMPs, as we mentioned before, can be of significantly high quality. Converting BMP to JPG means that the JPG’s compression algorithm could minimize the size of the BMP to a large extent, with little to no decrease in quality.
A basic image in BMP format can be hundreds of kilobytes, even after making it smaller, as its file size remains the same. The same image in a JPG format, on the other hand, is only 2 to 5 kilobytes. JPGs are lossy, however. Compression of pixels by converting the same image from BMP to JPG and saving it several times will result in a significant decrease in image quality.
The compression algorithm is lossy, and could potentially lead to a degradation of image quality. JPG files often also include metadata, which is information about the image, such as description, dimensions, camera type, shutter speed, date modified, etc.
For whatever reason, say you need to find a BMP to JPG converter. Let’s find out how you can go about converting your picture formats.
1. Using MS Paint to convert BMP to JPG
You can use MS Paint to convert your images from a BMP to JPG format.
- Open MS Paint on your (hopefully) post-Windows XP PC.
- Open your BMP file in Paint.
- Next, click on “File” and then press “Save As.”
- When a small, new dialog box opens, press “Save as Type.” A dropdown menu will open. Choose JPG as the file format.
- Press “Save.”
This is one of the easiest ways to convert BMP to JPG. However, you might be using a device that does not have MS paint pre-installed. In that case, you can use an online BMP to JPG converter.
2. Online BMP to JPG Converters
There are some great online tools out there that you can use to convert images.
You can use Browserling.com to convert images from BMP to JPG.
- Press “Choose file.”
- Select whichever BMP file you want to convert.
- Press “Convert to JPG.”
- A download of your converted image will be automatically done.
Online Converter is another tool you can use to convert your files from BMP to JPG.
- You can upload an image from a URL as well as a file in your computer. Simply click the “Source” dropdown and press “From a URL.” If the BMP file is downloaded, you can click “Upload File.”
- Choose the file you want to convert.
- Press “Convert” and wait for the image to compress into a JPG.
- It will automatically download.
There are other tools available online for conversions. Make sure you check them out if you want!
There you have it!
Converting BMP into JPG is easy. It’s not very technical at all, and you’ll get the hang of it in no time! There are several reasons why you may want to make the conversion, but the important thing is that you know how it’s done.
